Understanding and Preparing for Vertebroplasty: A Comprehensive Guide for Patients and Families

At the Bangalore Spine Specialist Clinic, we believe that an informed patient is an empowered patient. When you or a loved one is faced with a spinal compression fracture, the road to recovery can feel daunting. Vertebroplasty is a highly effective, minimally invasive procedure designed to alleviate pain, stabilize the spine, and help you get back to the activities you love.

This guide is intended to walk you and your family through the preparation process, ensuring you feel confident, prepared, and supported every step of the way.

What is Vertebroplasty?

Vertebroplasty is a specialized procedure used to treat compression fractures of the vertebrae—the bones that make up your spine. These fractures are frequently caused by osteoporosis (a condition where bones become thin and weak), spinal tumors, or physical trauma.

During the procedure, I use specialized imaging guidance (fluoroscopy) to precisely inject a medical-grade bone cement into the fractured vertebra. This cement hardens rapidly, stabilizing the bone and providing immediate structural support. The primary goal is simple: to relieve your pain, restore your mobility, and improve your overall quality of life.

Why Is Preparation Important?

While vertebroplasty is minimally invasive and is not classified as “major surgery,” your preparation is vital for ensuring the safest and most successful outcome. By following these steps, you help our team at the clinic manage your health effectively, minimize risks, and streamline your recovery.

Patient Preparation: The Days and Hours Leading Up to Surgery

Your preparation begins well before you walk through our clinic doors. Please consider the following checklist:

1. Medical Assessment and Health History

I will conduct a thorough review of your medical history and physical condition. It is essential that we identify the exact location of your pain and rule out other underlying concerns.

  • Tests: We may order blood tests, an ECG (to assess heart health), and imaging studies like MRI or CT scans to map the fracture site.
  • Infections & Conditions: Inform me immediately if you have an active infection, or any chronic conditions like diabetes that may require specialized management.

2. Managing Medications

This is a critical step. Please provide a complete list of all prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, and herbal supplements you currently take.

  • Blood Thinners: If you take anticoagulants (blood-thinning medications) or aspirin, we will need to coordinate with your primary physician to determine if these should be paused before the procedure to reduce bleeding risks.
  • Do Not Stop Unilaterally: Never stop taking a prescribed medication without first consulting with your doctor.

3. The Night Before and Day of Surgery

  • Fasting: You will typically be asked to avoid food and drink for several hours before the procedure, often from midnight the night before.
  • Hygiene: On the morning of your surgery, please shower and wash the area of the procedure with soap and water.
  • Clothing: Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Leave all valuables and jewelry at home.

A Guide for the Patient’s Family: How You Can Help

Supporting a loved one through any spinal procedure is an act of care. As a family member, your role is to act as a partner in their recovery.

Before the Procedure

  • Logistics: The most important task is to arrange transportation. Because you may feel groggy from sedation or anesthesia, you must have a friend or family member drive you home.
  • Questions: Help your loved one write down any questions for me. Having a list ready can reduce anxiety on the day of the procedure.
  • Understanding the Risks: While rare, complications such as cement leakage, nerve irritation, or infection can occur. Discuss these with me so you feel informed and calm.

During the Recovery Phase (The First 24 Hours)

  • Supervision: Plan to have someone stay with the patient for the first 24 hours after they return home.
  • Activity Restrictions: For the first day, the patient should not drive, operate heavy machinery, or lift anything heavier than 10 pounds (approx. 4.5 kg).
  • Monitoring: Keep an eye on the incision site. A small amount of fluid or blood is normal, but contact our office if you notice excessive redness, swelling, or pain.
  • Fever and Pain: While some temporary discomfort is normal as the cement cures, please report any high fever or sudden, severe pain to us immediately.

When to Contact the Bangalore Spine Specialist Clinic

We want you to feel supported, not just during the surgery, but throughout your entire recovery. Please do not hesitate to contact our team if you experience:

  • A fever above 100°F.
  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the limbs.
  • Severe back pain that worsens rather than improves.
  • Symptoms like shortness of breath or chest pain (please seek emergency care immediately).
